Veronica took a deep breath, looked at her reflection in the rearview mirror, and psyched herself up. She confidently marched across the jail’s parking lot. She approached the reception desk like she’s never even squashed a bug, let alone committed felonies.
“Hello, I’m here to pay Duke Hansen’s fines.”
The officer at the desk walked her through the process, and an hour later, Duke was a free man.
“Alright, where’s Zoe?” Duke asked, looking around expectantly.
“I’m not bailing her out.”
“She’s your girlfriend. You can do it. I don’t want anything to do with her.”
“I don’t have any money! Why do you think I called you?”
“I left you some money and all of your stuff in your truck. What you do with it is your business. Bail her out. Flee the country i don’t care. Just stay away from me.”
“That’s not fair. What if I need it for like food or housing.”
“You should have thought about that before you…” Veronica held up her hand and put her index finger up, “one spent all your money.” She put up her middle finger, “two left me for another woman! Now fuck off!”
Duke laughed in disbelief. She would act be so high and mighty in this situation.
“Fine. Have it your way. I won’t darken your door again, but let’s check-in in six months and see which one of us is happier. You’re miserable, Veronica. You’ve always been, and you always will be. You don’t know what you want. You think you want adventure and intrigue, but it hasn’t made you happy yet.”
