#90 Highway 61, Here We Come (300 words)

Inspired by: California

Tiffany laid on the couch, crying. When Sadie returned from work, she concealed herself beneath a blanket. Sadie heard her sniffing and sobbing under the blanket. Tiffany felt Sadie lie down behind her and decided to uncover her head.

“Are you hanging in there?” Sadie asked, wrapping an arm around Tiffany.

“I know you don’t want to hear this, but…”

“Don’t say it! He was the love of my life, and he just dumped me.”

“He wants to give you a better life than visiting him in prison every other weekend.”

“I don’t care! I love him so much.”

“And he loves you, that’s why he broke up with you.”

More tears burst from Tiffany’s face.

“What can I do to cheer you up or take your mind off Duncan for a few days?”

“Nothing,” Tiffany said, covering her face in the blanket again.

“I planned a trip the other day, even though you wouldn’t run away with me.”

“You just went on vacation.”

“I visited my family, that isn’t a vacation.”

Tiffany uncovered herself.

“Where would we go?”

“Highway 61.”

“We’re going to see a highway?”

“It’s infamous!”

“It’s asphalt.”

“Then we’ll go somewhere else. California? Let’s go right now!”

“Right now? But Duncan’s sentencing is tomorrow.”

“He doesn’t want you there. He wants you to be having fun driving west without a care in the world.”

Tiffany fought the urge to burst out in tears again and instead went to her room and packed a suitcase, she still cried, but at least she was off the couch.

Sadie packed a bag too. Within a couple hours, they had two suitcases loaded in Sadie’s car.

“Get ready, California, because Sadie and Tiffany are going to fuck you up!”

Tiffany smiled for the first time all day.
