Ein stepped out of Douglas Berry’s office and knew he nailed the interview. Sadie waited outside to find out how it went.

“Do you think you got it?”

“Oh my gosh, this is so exciting! We’ll be coworkers, and you can test all my samples first because I’m your girl…”

Sadie caught herself, realizing they never discussed it.

“I mean, I’m fine with it if you are.”

“You want to?”

“Totally. Wow big day, I got a job and an official girlfriend.”

“Well, you don’t know about the job. You better get home, so you don’t miss the call!”

Sadie pushed Ein out of the building.

Ein felt confident this would be a good life change. Sure getting another lab tech job wasn’t his dream, but Sadie was right. He has a cat to provide for now and needs some income. He nailed every question, and with Sadie’s recommendation, he knew the job was his.

At home, he found BC anxiously waiting for food despite it being nowhere near dinner time.

“Has the phone rung yet?” Ein asked the cat.

BC meowed noncommittally.

The phone rang.

“Speak of the devil.” Ein answered the phone, “hello? I did? That’s fantastic. Next week is fine. See you Monday!”

Ein hung up the phone and picked up the cat, who protested weakly.

“I’ve got a job, BC! You won’t starve to death, and we can afford to stay here! You won’t even notice a difference except I may be more tired and annoyed when I get home.”

BC had enough being spun around and sank their claws into Ein. They struggled to get onto Ein’s shoulder before leaping to the floor. Once they safely on the floor, they gave Ein a congratulatory meow and looked out the window.
