#12 Let Me Die in My Offices (400 words)

Inspired by: Let Me Die in my Footsteps

Ein waited in the car all day, and Reginald never came down from his office. He checked his watch, and it was near 10 PM. He decided to go upstairs to check on him.

The office was dark and empty besides a light coming from the corner office. Ein stood in the doorway, the door was ajar. Reginald had his back to the door and was looking out his window at the Chesapeake Bay.

Ein gently knocked on the doorframe. Reginald spun around.

“Oh, Ein. I’m sorry, I forgot about you.”

Ein entered the office and sat across from Reggie’s desk.

“Everything okay, boss?”

“I don’t like being called that, call me Reggie.”

“What do you know about Jon Fall?”

“He runs Fall Industries. Uh… I don’t know, he’s rich. Pretty handsome. Old-ish?”

“Have you ever bought a Fall product?”

“I mean, I don’t really own much, I just sort of wander around.”

“He’s one of the nation’s top defense contractors. The Fall’s have had their fingers in every industry at one time or another. Jon didn’t want to lead the industry of the day, he wanted to lead every industry. Now he’s coming for mine.”

“He wants to buy you?”

“My company. Jon’s been after it for years and now that Jo… my friend died, somehow he got his hands on her shares. He’s trying to take it over. But I refuse to go down without a fight.”

“I don’t really know what you do here. Sorry.”

“I told you I was shot once.”

Ein nodded.

“I laid on the ground gasping. Unable to breathe due to the massive hole in my lung. I realized what my family had done to countless people over the years. I vowed if I survived, I’d spend every penny I had helping people breathe better.”

“That’s noble.”

“The vow was the easy part, then, unfortunately, I survived and had to follow through.”

“Now Jon Fall wants tech?”

“That’s just it, I don’t see what he gains, but the fact he’s trying tells me I’m on to something. I’m not content in cashing out and riding into the sunset. I need to see this through.”

They sat there in silence for a moment.

“There’s something strange about you, Ein.”

“Something about your vibe. I like having it around. Work for me full time and help me beat Jon Fall.”

“You’ve got it.”
