January 28th, Part 14

Walter Livingston rode through the English countryside. The erratic but beloved Alderman banned the color red from the town. After what happened between James and Ruby, Walter was certain it must be Septemvir James.

During the twilight of a Tuesday night, Walter entered the town. The citizens threw a feast in honor of their Alderman. There wasn’t a scrap of red for miles. They held the feast in a banquet hall with an open invitation.

Sept James sat at the head of the table with the crystal talisman hanging around his neck. He looked a thousand years old. His head hung low and his body curved inward. A far cry from the man who ruined his date all those decades ago.

Walter pricked a servant’s arm as they brought a plate to James. By the time they reached their leader, a rivulet of blood trickled down their arm. James noticed and all sound in the room died.
